Heirloom Seeds

Heirloom Seeds and Plants

When I was a kid, we'd all visit my grandmother in the country, it was a great moment. I particularly remember his tomatoes all aligned in a line on the edge of the window and all of our visit perfectly ripe, what a stroke of "luck" that was! For many years I tried to find this flavor, but in vain. I figuredvqvax that Grandma was a kind of secret, until what my father told me the reason. You see, the secret of Grandma was simple, she kept her plants seeds for the next season and beyond, she collected seeds, and now 30 years on the practice became the collection of traditional seed

Increasingly grow vegetables in old in my case, I am immediately taken back to my grandmothers kitchen and beautiful days of my childhood. There are, of course, always been collectors of traditional seeds, but they were about in small groups, or tight social networks (Long before the Internet has stolen the sentence). The increased support for vegetables forgotten resulted in seed catalogs now for storing these items, and while the modern hybrids are bred to be more robust, or to give a better performance, inheritance increasingly means you can be listed in the bygone era.

That means a plant as a legacy?

Well there are three main characteristics of plants Heirloom

Almost all seeds Heritage varieties are open pollinated and seeds of these plants normally on the characteristics of a single mother plant. Heirlooms growth in line the type of seed. This is what leads people like my grandmother enjoying the same fruit year after year.

Some heritage perennials are propagated from cuttings rather than seed, and although they are still considered legacy, their seeds can not not produce exactly the same varieties. That said, there are still exceptions to this rule, however, these are exceptions rather than the rule.

Ideally, you should be able to trace the origins back fifty years or more. Again if this range is arbitrary rather than carved in stone, although many objects dating back way further. As a guide, before World War 2 seeds are assets such as seed catalogs these varieties dumped for hybrids that have been "better". Is not that always the case, you never know what you have until he is gone.

The latter feature is history. Most heirloom family history, as Grandmother kept the seeds and sent them to my father, and as my father sent me to other families and friends have done this, which makes the seed inheritances. Many of these seeds, of course, came to us through migration across the continents, then heirlooming was not something they wanted was something they should do. Fortunately, we now enjoy, as we have such a wide variety traditional seed available ..

Thank you to my family line, my children are able to visit home graddads, and enjoy the same fruit that I did when I was their age, and I must admit. When nobody is looking, I sneak into the kitchen take a ripe tomato from the window, close your eyes, bite, and return home grandmothers … ….
