Heirloom Tomato Seeds
Your guide to choosing the best heirloom tomato plants
A major benefit of growing your own tomato plants is that you can choose hundreds of interesting varieties instead of 3 or 4 that you get at the supermarket. Heirloom tomato plants offer a wide range and are very rewarding to develop. We will look at some great heirloom varieties I recommend you plant.
Inheritance of tomato plants are appointed because they are the type of tomatoes that were grown in previous generations before the commercialization of agriculture, but the seeds have been preserved over time. Heirloom tomatoes come in all shapes and sizes with strong flavors. The main reason they are not grown much in commercial agriculture is due to the shape of the strange fruit that harvest or packing as well. This is not an obstacle for the amateur gardener like you, who welcomes the opportunity to grow vegetables unique and tasty.
Heirloom Plant considerations:
Think about the type fruit that you want to happen – If you want ultra-large tomatoes, you must select a "steak" or "mortgage lifter" variety. These can produce fruit about 2 pounds in weight. Generally, these plants produce fewer tomatoes per plant compared to regular varieties of businesses. If you want interesting colors that you can try a 'Black Krim' (dark brown) or "Great White" (white) – you can use to exotic looking salads. Finally you can grow varieties of bizarre form as "yellow pear" or "sausage" which forms up to their names! I recommended some tomatoes for you below.
Recommendation # 1: Beefsteak tomatoes:
These are large tomato carrying a lot of flesh and can reach up to 2 pounds in weight. A single wafer can be the size of a hamburger! They take about 80 days to reach maturity of the seedling. Most plants grow to a manageable size (about 6 feet) and need no staking heavy. Some varieties beefsteak good to look for include "watermlon", "Dolly" & "Beefmaster".
Recommendation # 2: Expand the "Russian" Tomatoes:
There are a number of heirloom varieties and very distinct flavor from Russia. Most of these are good producers to take about 80 days to reach maturity and are well worth trying. They grow best in slightly colder climates. These include "Black Krim" and "Black Russian" (dark peeled tomatoes with a salty taste), "Russian Rose" (highly recommended, petal-shaped with the characteristic taste sweet) and Banana (yellow long shaped tomato paste).
